A complete ZLD system may include pretreatment, membrane concentration, evaporation, crystallization and solids handling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pretreatment is one of the most important parts of a ZLD system. If pretreatment is not properly designed, downstream membranes, evaporators and crystallizers may face scaling, fouling, corrosion or unstable operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first consideration is water quality. High hardness, silica, fluoride, heavy metals, oil, suspended solids and organic matter may all affect the ZLD process. Different contaminants require different pretreatment methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second consideration is the downstream process. If the water will enter RO, NF, DTRO, STRO or an evaporator, the pretreatment target will be different. For membrane concentration, SDI, turbidity, scaling tendency and organic fouling should be controlled. For evaporation, scaling salts, corrosion and foaming risks should be evaluated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third consideration is sludge and concentrate handling. Some pretreatment methods remove contaminants by precipitation or clarification, which may generate sludge. Project owners should consider how this sludge will be managed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fourth consideration is operating stability. Industrial wastewater quality may change over time. A practical ZLD pretreatment process should have enough tolerance for water quality fluctuation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ceramic membranes, softening, coagulation, clarification, ultrafiltration and chemical dosing may be combined depending on the project. For high-salinity or high-hardness wastewater, a single pretreatment step is usually not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before choosing a ZLD pretreatment process, project owners should avoid focusing only on equipment price.
