STRO, or special tubular reverse osmosis, is a type of membrane process used in some high-salinity or difficult wastewater applications. Compared with conventional spiral-wound RO elements, STRO systems are often considered for wastewater streams with higher fouling tendency or higher operating pressure requirements.
Typical applications may include RO concentrate treatment, landfill leachate, high-salinity wastewater, industrial brine concentration and wastewater volume reduction before evaporation or further treatment.
In many ZLD or near-ZLD projects, membrane concentration is used before evaporation to reduce water volume and improve overall system efficiency. STRO can be one of the membrane options for this step, depending on feed water composition and system design.
However, STRO is not a replacement for pretreatment. High-salinity wastewater may still contain hardness, silica, suspended solids, organic matter or oil. These substances can cause scaling or fouling. Proper pretreatment is important before high-pressure membrane concentration.
When evaluating STRO, project owners should consider feed TDS, hardness, silica, COD, oil, suspended solids, pH, temperature, recovery target and concentrate disposal route. The final system pressure, recovery rate and cleaning frequency depend on these conditions.
STRO may be suitable when conventional RO has difficulty handling the wastewater, but it should be selected carefully. Pilot testing or detailed water analysis is recommended for challenging waste streams.
For industrial users, the key question is not only whether STRO can treat the water, but whether the whole process is reliable, maintainable and economical over the expected operating period.
